Kudus Traditional House as a Potential Tropical Building Design for Climate Action

One of the Sustainable Development Goals is Climate Action, meaning taking immediate actions to combat climate change and its impacts. This study evaluates potentials Indonesian traditional houses in helping mitigating tropics. As a case study, author analyses designs Kudus house built primarily old city Kudus, province Central Java, Indonesia. The employs qualitative research, making use primary data from field observations interviews. Field were carried out identify design elements houses, while interviews undertaken obtain information on how deal with problems. results show that are designed such way minimizes need for air conditioning energy uses given hot tropical climate. include following: (1) building masses an open yard middle masses’ configuration; (2) extended north south direction; (3) optimization openings, lighting ventilation, walls roof building; (4) sloping wide eaves.
